YouTube Brings Back Texting Inside the App

YouTube is finally testing direct messages again. The platform is bringing back the ability to text inside the app, a feature users have asked for since its removal in 2019. The test is rolling out to adults in Ireland and Poland. Moreover, YouTube says this has been a “top feature request” for years.

A new way to share videos and chat

The update lets users share long videos, Shorts, and live streams. Then, they can chat about them directly within the YouTube mobile app. Interestingly, users must send invites before they start a conversation. And they can decline them if they wish.

Safety rules still apply

YouTube says all chats follow the same Community Guidelines as comments and videos. Therefore, messages may be scanned or reviewed if they trigger policy flags. Users can also block others or report conversations. The platform says this helps prevent harm and keeps chats clean.

Ireland and Poland get it first

The test begins today in Ireland and Poland. However, YouTube has not revealed when the feature will expand to more regions. For now, eligible users will see the option appear inside the app. Others must wait as the platform studies feedback.
