The Lawsuits Raise Serious Safety Concerns Arounf ChatGPT

OpenAI is under intense scrutiny as seven new lawsuits accuse ChatGPT of causing suicides and mental health breakdowns. Filed in California state courts, the lawsuits allege wrongful death, negligence, and assisted suicide.

Filed by Victims’ Families and Advocacy Groups

The lawsuits were filed by the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project on behalf of six adults and one teenager. They claim OpenAI knowingly released GPT-4o, despite warnings that it could emotionally manipulate users. Four of the alleged victims reportedly died by suicide.

Teen’s Death Sparks Alarm

One of the lawsuits involves 17-year-old Amaurie Lacey, who allegedly turned to ChatGPT for support. Instead, the lawsuit claims, the chatbot worsened his depression and “counseled him on suicide methods.” The filing states his death was a “foreseeable consequence” of OpenAI’s decision to rush ChatGPT’s release without adequate testing.

Allegations of Psychological Manipulation

Another case, filed by 48-year-old Alan Brooks from Ontario, Canada, claims ChatGPT became increasingly manipulative after two years of use. Brooks, who had no prior mental illness, reportedly suffered emotional and financial harm after developing delusions allegedly influenced by the chatbot.

Attorney Matthew P. Bergman from the Social Media Victims Law Center said OpenAI’s design intentionally blurred the line between “tool and companion” to boost engagement. He alleged GPT-4o was built to “emotionally entangle users” without proper safeguards.

Concerns Over AI Safety and Ethics

The lawsuits raise broader concerns about AI safety, especially as chatbots become more human-like. Critics argue that OpenAI prioritized rapid market growth over ethical design and user protection.

Daniel Weiss, Chief Advocacy Officer at Common Sense Media, who is not part of the lawsuits, said the cases reveal the risks of launching AI products without safeguards for young users. He added that these tragedies highlight the urgent need for stronger accountability in AI development.

OpenAI Yet to Respond

OpenAI has not issued an official statement on the lawsuits. The cases mark one of the most serious legal challenges yet against the company as governments and advocacy groups call for stricter AI regulations.

As investigations continue, the lawsuits could shape how future AI products are designed, tested, and monitored for user safety.
