Apple Unveils iPhone Pocket to 'Wear Your iPhone' — But Is It Really Needed?

Apple’s New iPhone Pocket Mixes Fashion and Function

Apple has teamed up with Japanese fashion brand ISSEY MIYAKE to launch the iPhone Pocket, a 3D-knitted pouch designed to “wear your iPhone.” The limited-edition accessory will be available from November 14 across several global markets including the U.S., Japan, and the UK.

The iPhone Pocket features a ribbed structure that stretches to fit different iPhone models and even small personal items. It can be carried by hand, tied to a bag, or worn over the shoulder — almost like a minimalist crossbody pouch.

Design Meets Simplicity — at a Price

The design takes inspiration from ISSEY MIYAKE’s iconic pleated fabric, which expands and contracts like a piece of sculpted cloth. Apple says it wanted to create an “additional pocket” that blends craftsmanship with utility.

However, the pricing stands out. The short strap version costs $149.95, while the longer strap model goes up to $229.95. For a product that holds an iPhone and little else, the price puts it closer to luxury fashion than a functional tech accessory.

A Collaboration Focused on Aesthetics

According to Apple and MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO, the collaboration aims to celebrate “craftsmanship, simplicity, and delight.” The iPhone Pocket comes in a range of vibrant colors — from lemon and mandarin to sapphire and black — designed to complement iPhone finishes.

The 3D-knitted build was developed entirely in Japan through ISSEY MIYAKE’s textile research. It’s light, breathable, and stretchable, but beyond design appeal, there’s little technological innovation to justify its cost.

Is iPhone Pocket a Luxury or a Necessity?

Apple has often blurred the line between technology and lifestyle, but this collaboration seems to lean more toward fashion than function. For users seeking practical protection, a typical phone case offers better value.

Still, the iPhone Pocket might attract those who view the iPhone as a personal statement. Its minimalism and craftsmanship may resonate with design enthusiasts — though at this price, it’s unlikely to be a mass-market hit.

Summing Up

I feel the iPhone Pocket tries to be visually elegant and thoughtfully made. Yet, in an era of foldables and AI-driven wearables, Apple’s newest accessory feels more like a collectible than an innovation. Would you buy it?
