AI And Telecom Competition Heats-up India

Google has partnered with Reliance Industries to offer its AI Pro subscription free for 18 months to Jio 5G users. The move comes just months after Airtel joined hands with Perplexity to give free access to its AI Pro service. Both partnerships signal how India is becoming the next big frontier for AI expansion.

Jio follows Airtel, Google follows Perplexity

Two industries — telecom and tech — are racing to gain a stronghold in India’s booming AI space. Reliance, India’s largest telecom player, is now following Airtel’s lead by bundling premium AI services into its plans. Meanwhile, Google’s move mirrors Perplexity and OpenAI’s growing push to make AI tools accessible to millions in emerging markets.

Free access to Google’s Gemini and other AI tools

Under this partnership, eligible Jio users aged 18 to 25 will get access to Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro model via the Gemini app. The offer includes higher limits for AI image and video generation through Nano Banana and Veo 3.1, plus extended use of Notebook LM for learning and research. Users will also receive 2 TB of Google cloud storage across Photos, Gmail, Drive, and WhatsApp backups.

The 18-month package is valued at ₹35,100 and will later expand to all Jio subscribers nationwide.

Expanding AI infrastructure through Google Cloud

Beyond the consumer offer, Reliance has also partnered with Google Cloud to bring advanced AI infrastructure to India. Its new AI arm, Reliance Intelligence, will serve as Google Cloud’s go-to-market partner. The two will work together to expand Gemini Enterprise access for Indian organizations and build pre-trained AI agents for businesses.

“Today’s announcement will put Google’s cutting-edge AI tools in the hands of consumers, businesses, and developers,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet.

India: The new battleground for AI giants

India’s billion-plus internet users make it one of the most sought-after markets for global AI firms. Earlier this week, OpenAI announced that its ChatGPT Go plan will be free for Indian users from November 4. The move adds pressure on rivals like Google and Anthropic, both of which are scaling their operations in India.

For Reliance, this partnership is another step toward building an AI-powered ecosystem. At its annual meeting in August, the company announced new ventures with Google and Meta to invest ₹8.55 billion in AI development.

A race to empower India’s digital generation

From free AI subscriptions to expanded cloud access, India is witnessing an AI race unlike any other. Telecom and tech giants are now converging to make AI tools mainstream. As these collaborations deepen, India’s young digital population could play a key role in shaping the global AI future.
