ChatGPT Faces Heat, Shuts Down App-Like Ads

OpenAI Faces Questions Over “Ad-Like” Prompts

ChatGPT sparked a wave of complaints this week as users noticed suggestions that looked promotional. Many paying subscribers reported prompts recommending apps from companies like Peloton and Target. The reactions grew louder because these suggestions appeared inside an experience people expect to stay clean and neutral.

OpenAI responded by saying the prompts were meant to highlight apps on the ChatGPT platform. Even then, users questioned the intent and pushed for clarity. That conversation spread quickly across social platforms and forced OpenAI to address the situation head-on.

OpenAI Leaders Address the Confusion

Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, stepped in to calm the concerns. He admitted the team “fell short” and confirmed they removed the feature while improving recommendation precision. Chen also said the company plans to add new controls so people can adjust or disable suggestions.

Nick Turley, who leads ChatGPT, shared another update and dismissed claims of active advertising tests. He said reports of ads came from misleading screenshots and repeated that ChatGPT has no paid promotions running.

Internal Shift Signals a Bigger Priority

This backlash arrived during a larger transition inside OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman recently issued a “code red” memo that pushes the entire company to improve ChatGPT’s core experience. That directive delays several upcoming projects, including advertising initiatives expected under new executive Fidji Sumo.

The timing shows where OpenAI’s attention now lies. The company wants to protect user trust and refine ChatGPT before exploring any feature that may feel commercial.

What It Means for ChatGPT Users

The decision to pause app suggestions reflects how quickly OpenAI reacts to user dissatisfaction. People rely on ChatGPT for work, research, and daily tasks, so anything that resembles an ad raises concern. Many users want a tool that informs them without nudging them toward brands or services.

OpenAI now promises a cleaner experience with clearer boundaries. Whether app suggestions return in a new format remains uncertain, but users have clearly influenced the direction.
