ChatGPT Atlas brings AI directly into your browser

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser built around its conversational AI, making browsing more interactive and intelligent. Unlike traditional browsers, Atlas integrates ChatGPT right into the interface, allowing users to ask, explore, and act—all without switching tabs or copying content.

Atlas is currently available for macOS users worldwide, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon. It’s accessible to Free, Plus, Pro, Go, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users, depending on plan settings.

AI at the center of your browsing experience

The key difference between Atlas and any other browser is that ChatGPT is built in, not added as an extension. Users can open a new tab, type a question or a URL, and instantly receive a mix of chat responses, search results, images, videos, and news—all in one place.

Atlas is designed to understand your browsing context. Whether you’re reading a research paper or shopping online, ChatGPT can summarize, analyze, or automate actions in real time, directly within the browser window.

Smart memory that works for you

One of Atlas’s most useful features is browser memory. This allows ChatGPT to remember details from the sites you visit and bring them up later when needed. For instance, you can ask it to “find job listings I viewed last week” or “summarize the market trends I researched yesterday.”

These memories are completely optional. Users can view, archive, or delete them anytime. Turning on incognito mode pauses memory creation, and clearing browsing history automatically deletes any linked memories.

OpenAI emphasizes privacy—browser data isn’t used to train models by default, and users can control whether they want their browsing activity included in training.

Agent mode: Your AI that takes action

Atlas also introduces agent mode, an upgraded version of ChatGPT’s task automation feature. It allows the AI to perform actions inside the browser—like researching, booking appointments, or shopping—without manual switching.

For example, you could ask ChatGPT to plan a trip, open relevant tabs, compare hotels, and even add items to a cart on your behalf.

Currently in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users, agent mode brings ChatGPT closer to being a real digital assistant.

Privacy, safety, and control at the forefront

OpenAI says Atlas has been designed with safety and transparency in mind. ChatGPT cannot access your local files, run code, or install extensions. Sensitive websites like banks will trigger a pause for user confirmation before the AI acts.

Users can also toggle “ChatGPT page visibility” for any website, allowing them to decide when ChatGPT can or cannot view page content.

Parents can use parental controls to turn off memory or agent mode, ensuring safety for younger users.

A new kind of web experience

ChatGPT Atlas marks an important shift toward agentic browsing, where AI helps complete everyday online tasks—from learning to working—without leaving your tab.

By combining context awareness, privacy, and automation, OpenAI is redefining what a browser can do. Instead of being a passive window to the web, Atlas becomes an active assistant that learns and works alongside you.
