Apple Plans AppMigrationKit for Easier iPhone-to-Android Transfer

Apple is developing a new framework to simplify app data transfer between iPhone and Android devices. The tool, called AppMigrationKit, is currently in beta for iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1 or later.

The framework allows developers to prepare apps for one-time migration of user data when switching platforms. Apple has already published documentation for developers.

How AppMigrationKit Will Work

Developers can set apps to import, export, or do both during migration using the AppMigrationExtension protocol.

When a user sets up a new device, all apps supporting AppMigrationKit include their data in the migration package. Cloud data can also be restored on the new device after transfer.

Apple clarifies that AppMigrationKit only works with non-Apple platforms, such as Android. It does not support transfers between iOS or iPadOS devices.

Integration with “Transfer to Android” Feature

Apple is adding a Transfer to Android option in Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Users will see a guide on what can and cannot be migrated.

Android is expected to have a complementary Transfer to iPhone feature, initially focused on eSIM transfer, allowing two-way data migration.

Developers interested in adopting AppMigrationKit can refer to Apple’s documentation. It covers:

Apple warns that the framework is still in beta and may change before public release. Apps should be tested with the final OS.
